CTorrentPSP - Torrent client for PSP (obv!)
March 18, 2008 on 9:17 pm | In PSP |ey All, Neoflash time again!
This time I’m entering a torrent client for PSP, because I thought we need one.
Turns out we don’t really need one, but it is nice to have it anyway

Download CTorrentPSP Executable
Download CTorrentPSP Source
Read the README.PSP for more details and the list of bugs ![]()
Delete the resources/splash.png to get rid of the splash screen.
Let me know what you download with it! lol!
Developed under M33 3.90-2, using PSPLINK (of course), run under 3.XX Kernel. 1.5 not supported (Use the code, you can make it work on 1.5 if you want it to)

It’s quite a good torrent downloader, the speed is quite good, you can download music with it and small games (big games if uve got the time) great app!
im hoping that in the future you can download faster.
thx for the app!
Comment by Tissell — March 19, 2008 #
Oh, I DO need a Torrent Client. Thank you so much. <3 It works great… But it would be great, if you could add a file browser so I can use my torrents I’ve just downloaded. Keep the good work.

Drizzle02 - Check if your wifi switch is on.
CTorrentPSP doesn’t check and it will lock right where you are getting a lock up if the switch isn’t on.
Comment by Danzel — March 19, 2008 #
It is on. Ive been checking both ways too. It just doesnt do anything after i press X.
Comment by Drizzle02 — March 19, 2008 #
This kinda tips me off. I realy want this bad.
It just doesnt do nothin…
When i press “HOME” button. Click “YES” MY PSP freezes and shuts down.

Post some more details:
How many wifi connections do you have configured?
What firmware version are you running?
What CFW plugins are you running, have you tried disabling them?
Comment by Danzel — March 19, 2008 #
I upgraded too 3.90-2 and it worked. But now when I use a torrent it dont download, Ive downloaded 5 torrents and all the same, dont download. How do I get them to work?
Comment by Drizzle02 — March 19, 2008 #
I haven’t had a problem with a torrent yet.
Make sure the torrent has enough peers/seeds and the tracker doesn’t require any advanced features.
what does the first set of numbers at the bottom left say?
Comment by Danzel — March 19, 2008 #
make sure your psp isnt running 1.50 kernal
Comment by dsfgsd — March 19, 2008 #
You should collaborate with that guy who makes PSPFiler, Mediumgauge (though I doubt these would be easily compatible) to integrate this function into PSPFiler… Or something. I would find it badass.
Comment by Fiska — March 19, 2008 #
nice work! looking forward to the next update if your going to release one. We needed a torrent client for the PSP. Thx alot
Comment by Steve — March 20, 2008 #
K it works now. Im using my non-static IP adress. I no longer have 1.50 kernal adon. I was at firmware 3.71 M33 and now at 3.90 M33-2. Thanks this thing is Legit!
Comment by Drizzle02 — March 20, 2008 #
It would be cool if we can exit with the home button while downloading a torrent then run ctorrent when we have the time then continue the download not start from the beggining!
Comment by Dark Chazz — March 20, 2008 #
What would be good is an option to not download parts of a torrent. Like if you donwloading a cd, you should be able to just pick certain songs and not forced to dl the whole things.
Comment by NyghtcrawleR — March 20, 2008 #
yea
Comment by Dark Chazz — March 20, 2008 #
how do i get this to work? where do i put it?
Comment by Vehemuz — March 20, 2008 #
@Dark Chazz - you don’t have to redownload, it just takes a bit to rescan the partially complete files from disk.
@Vehemuz - http://forums.qj.net/showthread.php?t=13796
Comment by Danzel — March 20, 2008 #
That means I can select the same .torrent file and it’ll continue the download from where I stopped?
Comment by Dark Chazz — March 20, 2008 #
Correct.
Comment by Danzel — March 20, 2008 #
Verry nice, but the data is damaged with a psp 3.71M33
whats my prob ??
Comment by Jensen — March 20, 2008 #
What data is damaged?
Works fine under m33 3.90-2
Comment by Danzel — March 20, 2008 #
I have a slim 2000, home button works fine but wifi froze on connecting and would not display any errors telling me that my connections had failed so I could select a new AP. other then that nice work
Comment by Monoxide — March 20, 2008 #
Alright, I am able to get about 21-4% of the file before the client seems to drop all peers and I have to reopen the app to complete another 20 sum % I have reached speeds of 78 with no problem with it stopping after it hits 60+, it was down at 38 with it had dropped
Comment by Monoxide — March 20, 2008 #
Hey.. Some people like to have a PSP Torrent client to save energy. If they have a PSP downloading a file overnight instead of a lets say 200-400 watt PC, thats a big difference in power. But it would also extend your hard drives life… well… its cool i think
Nice work!
Comment by Jowshuf — March 20, 2008 #

i hope this is good. lol i read the whole readme and the bugs and comments were funny. even tho they were true
but i still think that this is a good idea and i also hope there are more updates to come cuz it sounds great. might be wondering why i havent put it on my psp yet? well… im grounded

Comment by shazeee — March 22, 2008 #
@shazzee
put it in game (the folder ctorrent, make sure that it’s directly in GAME, niet in a subfolder called ctorrent) and g oto your internetbrowser (pspbrowser) and go to a torrent tracker (such as piratebay) en click something you want to download. It’ll ask you if you want to save the file. click yes and choose your destination (for example :PSP/COMMON) then go to filer/IRshel or usb and copy the torrent file from PSP/COMMON to PSP/GAME/ctorrent/torrents. exit usb/shell and go to the memory stick icon. click ctorrent and it’ll start. select your torrent and your wificonnection. it’ll say: state 2 and then state 3 and then start downloading/uploading

I’ve changed
—–UI.cpp—–
char* UI::GetTorrentFromUser(){
static char file[2048];
sprintf(file, “./torrents/”);
[...]
by
char* UI::GetTorrentFromUser()
{
static char file[2048]; // for returning the file name
sprintf(file, “/PSP/COMMON/”);

compilation : OK
but when I try to connect there is a bug in the 3rd step … I’ll retry but i’m deseperated
my GCC is right I’ve compilated original source and it’s work great !
Comment by biscottealacrevette — March 24, 2008 #
I don’t know why that wouldn’t work…..
The string is in two places isn’t it? Did you change both?
Comment by Danzel — March 24, 2008 #
when i download a file, it takes like a puarter to connect, but ok. after that it just dont download. it saysthere was just 1 leacher and no seader? on piratebay there were like 2000seaders!
other things: just a great idea!
Comment by markhelo — March 26, 2008 #
Sometimes it craps out and you need to restart the program. This is related to the network stack on the PSP as far as I can tell.
It will resume where you were up to, so no worries there.
Comment by Danzel — March 26, 2008 #
does or will ever work on 3.72 ofishl

Comment by kevin — March 27, 2008 #
opps! does it or will it *
Comment by kevin — March 27, 2008 #
Try it.
You need a custom firmware to run homebrew, official firmware won’t let you run it.
Comment by Danzel — March 27, 2008 #
Thanks so much for this. I don’t have a laptop, and I have to travel quite a bit, and this is a life saver. I don’t have that big of a mem card, and being able to get new media on the road is a real life saver. There is always an open access point somewhere near by that I can use. Now the boredom can be abated a bit.
Comment by Theredbaron — March 30, 2008 #
Marvelous! As you said, i never expected our psps to be able of such an amazing miracle, download torrents! Thanks!, It works very well, i’ve downloaded lots of music, movies and i was about to download games but i run out of battery, lol
However, i really wish you to keep updating this exceptional application, thanks once again! cheers!!!
Comment by pavel — March 31, 2008 #
Just a quiestion: After having downloaded (usuall i let my psp the whole night doing it), my psp really gets hot!, i wonder if that would kinda harm it, erode it, or might be the reason of a long term adverse effect on my psp?
Just adding, it also works while listening to music with irshell, amazing!
Comment by pavel — March 31, 2008 #
Heat should be no problem unless your PSP explodes…
(AKA it gets too hot)
I assume you are running it while plugged into the charger?
If so, try take the battery out while you download.
Comment by Danzel — March 31, 2008 #
Danzel > changed path work (GAME to COMMON)! no need to go on some other site to use torrent ! I can download my .torrent directly !
suggest 1 : try to add a internet browser laucher in Ctorrent to get torrent directly
suggest 2 : store file downloaded in appropriated folder : MP3>Music / MP4,avi,…>VIDEO / JPG,PNG…>picture / etc …

Are you going to make any updates to ctorrent and if so what would we see.
may be able to change # of connections.
Comment by Brian — April 11, 2008 #
I’ll update CTorrentPSP if it is needed.
Might do an update to try limit the # of connections. It already does so at the moment, but it doesn’t seem to work so well.

Hey,
Could anybody please tell me what ports it be usin?
2nd Q’
Danzel, would u make a new/better version?
Comment by Tony — April 14, 2008 #
1) It listens on port 2706.
2) If needed.
For those having issues, try this:
http://forums.qj.net/f-general-psp-help-22/t-browser-freezespauses-before-downloading-138302.html
and tell me if it works
Comment by Danzel — April 14, 2008 #
If you do an update for the connections could you do it so that when the file is downloding you can change how many you want. I had a torrent downloading at 120 with 6 connections and it was a lot more stable. I would like to try with 3 connections and work my way up from there. Also if say you connect to someone and you dont recive data in a amount of time will it drop that peer and reconnect to another and if not I thank would be good with a low number of connections.
Comment by Brian — April 16, 2008 #
so you had 3 active peers and were getting 120k/s without crashing?
Comment by Danzel — April 16, 2008 #
6 peers download speed 120 k/s did not crash. The best speed Got with up and down speed added together was a little over 180k/s. my PC dont work so i use this app alot.
Comment by Brian — April 16, 2008 #
Wow, interesting news.
I’ll try limit peers down even more than I have them now when I have some time, in a week probably…
Comment by Danzel — April 16, 2008 #
anyway to have option to change number of connections while downloading so I could test what a good # of peers would be. I would be happy. 3 or 4 weeks would fine to have that option or however long it takes.
Comment by Brian — April 16, 2008 #
piratebay best then? and good app
Comment by aceadam — April 24, 2008 #
Well, thepiratebay was what I used for testing, so I know it works.

Comment by wees — May 2, 2008 #
um… that link on qj.net doesn’t work? any other source?
this program would be perfect if we could choose the # of seeders/leechers. And of course if the bug where it stops downloading once it gets past a certain speed could be worked out.

ideas:
abulity to change # of connections,up/down speed/exclude files from download.
ability to traverse betwx cmb and ctorrent [hide in tray]
ability to save file to torrent directory w/o ir shell or usb connection.
more functions on gui
you have a great foundation, and the torrent community will benefit greatly from the addition.thanx and i will suggest this app to my torrent cohorts.

possible 3d swarm screen like vuse plug-in for azureus

Comment by nephyx — November 4, 2008 #
Thank and thank you. What a great little program.
I know youve said your working on DSP, but if you could just give it the ability to use .torrent files from other directorys instead of only /ctorrent/torrents/ it would be great.
My problem, download a .torrent from TPB with the PSP browser, and then save, but I can only save to PSP/COMMON/ PSP/PHOTO/ etc and not to the PSP/GAME/ctorrent/torrents/ which is required to start the download.
Am I missing something? Can you save to other directorys with the PSP’s browser.
This would mean I could just download a few torrents on my PSP and save having to bbot my pc up and then leave them going all nite
using my neighbours wifi….;DPlease, please think about it. Hell, I’m looking for a donate button as I type

“What folder(s) does the web browser download to?”
Options of which folder to save .torrents to are:-
/PICTURE
/MUSIC
/VIDEO
PSP/COMMON
PSP/PHOTO
PSP/MUSIC
/MP ROOT/100MNV01
” /101ANV01
So I cant download and then select the dl’ed .torrent in CTorrent.
Is there another PSP browser which enables folder traversing into PSP/GAME/……?
And well done for shutting all them critics up who I’ve just seen on a search for “a alternative BT client for PSP.”
There were a whole lot of naysayers before you created Ctorrent. Well done!

Hello, I seem to have a problem downloaidng this torrent: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4515422/Need.For.Speed.Undercover.EUR.PSP-GLoBAL
It seems to work for around 3 minutes, but then the download and upload speed will slowly go down to zero and not come up, and the seeds and peers slowly disconnect.
I’m going to try another torrent again and see if it works.
Comment by Diablo — December 15, 2008 #
Hello Danzel, million thanks for you greatest program!
But I have one small-dirty error. I’ve 5.00 M33-4 PSP, tested WiFi-connection, and so one. Everything is OK, connection established, files created (MS light is blinkking frequent), ***BUT nothing more. Just 0% FOR all. With seeds is ok (116) but nothing worked.
Excuse me for my poor English language, and Thanks in Advance.
P. S.: friendly advice — go out of your none-of-all-useless DSP and start go with your AWESOME, USEFUL, INCREDIBLE TorrentClient ;))

I really need help from the app programmer.
I will check the site often!
I’ve got a torrent of 8.71 Gigs total and 8Gig MSPD on my PSP (its real capacity is around 7.7Gigs) and when I select that torrent and the wifi connection the console dies - I understand why it happens (there is not enough space). But I would like to select just half of the files which the torrent contains (I have 2 folders 4.35Gigs each and I want to download only one of them). How to do that (if it is possible)? And if it isn’t possible - please make some update for this
Although, gratz for the app, man!

Downloading only certain files isn’t supported.
Maybe in the future…
Comment by Danzel — January 13, 2009 #
So maybe you know how to download just part of the torrent not by changing the homebrew, but modifying the torrent file itself?
Anyway, do you really think about giving the application a function of selecting the files the user wants to download?
From my side (I ain’t a programming noob, I wrote some lines of code in my life but I don’t really know much about PSP homebrews) I will try to look a bit into the source code and maybe there is some way… I don’t expect much but there is nothing to lose
Comment by Snowball91 — January 13, 2009 #
Oh, I just looked into the code and it seems it’s a lot of stuff here
I should understand more about torrent downloading/uploading specification and mechanism of how it works.
I’ve got one question - what program do you use to write and compile it all?
Comment by Snowball91 — January 13, 2009 #
Any old text editor for editing (I used kate on linux).
The PSPSDK is used for compiling.
On windows I think you’d use this: http://minpspw.sourceforge.net/
On linux.. something like this:
http://ps2dev.org/psp/Tools/Toolchain
(I use linux but I can’t remember how I set up the pspsdk)

Please, help to understand what’s wrong. I install program as you describe, but all I have is 0% on ANY torrent file from ANY tracker.I open 2706 port on NAT. No effect. My PSP is 5.00 M33-4 with 16GB MS. Everything OK except you torrent client

You’re really thinking about it? Maybe you have some idea of how to do that? Recently I have found a source code of Yet Another Bittorrent Client (ABC) which was written in Python. There are files called ‘files.py’ and ‘FileSelector.py’ - these must control selecting and downloading only specified files (files.py has even a comment on that). If only it could be rewritten in C and then joined into your project… Damn, if you decided to do this, it would be a lot of work to do (if it’s possible).
But also it would save my life
Comment by Snowball91 — January 17, 2009 #
1.I’ve found interesting thing: if I insert MS into card-reader I see many strange files in torrent folder (”abracadabra” file names). If I run sсandisk it reports many lost sectors!!! But if I look this folder when MS is in PSP everything is OK - I see only file which I download. No lost sectors. Maybe ctorrent incorrectly writes information on big MS? I think this can be useful for you to fix problem with big MS-card.
2.I wonder whether you plan to add support for DHT in your torrent client?
Comment by tredn — January 17, 2009 #
@Snowball91 - The client I’ve based mine on has support for choosing files, its just a matter of writing the interface. But i’m not going to even look into it until I have a new version of DSP released.
@tredn - It will probably be one of the libraries I’ve compiled against.
I won’t be adding DHT support unless Enhanced CTorrent gets it.

/home/guz/Download/psplibraries/build/SDL/src/video/psp/SDL_pspevents.c:274: undefined reference to `pspIrKeybFinish’

I realize that I need another libSDL version. Do you have any idea where can i find it?

Hi Danzel,
I find you program fantastic,
Great job =],
But i have a few questions,
Is a new version going to be released in the near future ?
Will there be extra trackers added ? (ex: Demonoid)
Will the download speed problem be fixed ?
I support you all the way,
And would love to see a new version come out.
Bye.
Comment by AlexJ — March 23, 2009 #
There may be a new version one day if I can be bothered.
All trackers that don’t require advanced features should work (no https).
Download speed would be something I would look into if I worked on another version.
I haven’t received any donations for making this, and I don’t use it myself. So working on it isn’t exactly a priority. I’d rather spend time working on something else I enjoy.
Comment by Danzel — March 23, 2009 #
Thanks for your very fast answer,
I always thought that only torrents from the pirate bay worked,
I would of try’d to modify the source code but i don’t understand the PSP SDK,
Do you think it’s possible to rewrite the code in lua ?
If so even i could maybe do it.
Comment by AlexJ — March 24, 2009 #
The source code is rather large, learn C if you want to work on it.

Comment by Migueliziosop — June 2, 2009 #
I have a question for you.
I would like to edit the src files to limit the maximum down bitrate (it seems to only crap out when it goes above ~60-70kbps). I perused through some of the source files, and I notice that the “cfg_max_bandwidth_down” variable is in a few different source files.
I am assuming that the only one I really need to worry about editing is the one that is in “btconfig.cpp”. Is this a correct assumption?
Comment by mike — June 9, 2009 #
I would specify it on line 154 of ctorrent.cpp as part of the command line. This is where I have configured the other ctorrent settings.
Don’t forget to increase argc
I haven’t had a look at the source code for a long time, so no promises!
Comment by Danzel — June 9, 2009 #
Thanks Danzel.
Just to let everyone know, the change I made is as follows:
int main(/*int argc, char **argv*/)
{
int argc = 9;
char* argv_static[] = { “ctorrent.prx”, “-M”, “20″, “-m”, “1″, “-D”, “55″, “-v” };
This change should be made on lines 151-154
This change should (theoretically) set your maximum download speed to 55 KB/s. I haven’t tested it out yet, but it should work.
My reasoning for doing this is that the program seems to break the network stack if it exceeds ~60-70 KB/s, and then you need to quit and restart the program. I’m hoping that by limiting the download speed to 55KB/s or lower, we can work around this problem.
Comment by mike — June 10, 2009 #
Ok everyone be advised that the code I just posted produces warnings (not errors, but warnings) when compiled… I’m not really sure why.
If I just compile the code as it was originally made by Danzel, I get no warnings, but as soon as I add those two arguments (”-D”, “55″) I get warnings on all 8 arguments…
Then if I remove the two arguments I added so that it is reverted back to the original (working) code again, it still gives me warnings on all 6 remaining arguments… strange right?
I don’t understand how the same exact code can give 0 warnings under one compilation, and then 6 under another compilation… strange.
It’s confusing me. I’m just going to ignore the warnings for now and when I get home today I will test out the code on my PSP.
If anyone is interested, the warning is as follows:
1>ctorrent.cpp (154) : warning: deprecated conversion from string constant to 'char*'
I find it very odd that adding my two arguments causes all 6 of the previously working arguments to get warnings….
Comment by mike — June 10, 2009 #
Well, I think it’s safe to disregard the warning messages. It seems that it only gives me the warnings if I edit “ctorrent.cpp” before compiling. If I save the project, close it completely, open it back up, and compile, I get no warnings…
It apparently has to do with g++ 4.2.3 wanting “const char” instead of “char”… I don’t really care much to be honest with you since this isn’t a vitally important app for me… If it works it works, if not, oh well. I don’t think it’ll cause any problems, however.
Comment by mike — June 10, 2009 #
Update:
After adding the new command line in to limit that download speed to 55 K/s and recompiling, everything worked fine. It did still break the network stack one time last night when the download was pinned at 55 and upload hit about 40. I guess the total bandwidth needs to be limited. I added another command line today to limit the upload bandwidth as well, and also reduced max peers to 16 (I figure most multiplayer games max out at about 16 players so 16 total peers should work). I will test again tonight on a large file and keep you updated.
As of right now, the settings are as follows:
Max download bandwidth : 50 K/s
Max upload bandwidth: 20 K/s
Max peers: 16
I will update again after doing some testing =)

I only found 2 things I dislike about it. . Is it possible to win without losing a life cause my zillion tries at accomplishing that feat all failed. The second is the lack of a damage reading for the weapons. How else can I figure out which weapon gives me the biggest bang for my buck? A way to see the enemys health percentage would be nice too. . Woops thats three my bad

The version of Enhanced CTorrent that CTorrentPSP is based on only supports 1 tracker from torrent files.
I think you will find that for the torrents you are trying to use the first tracker in the file is no longer available (thepiratebay has closed its tracker for example).
CTorrent also doesn’t support DHT or PEX, so they won’t help.
Open the torrent file on your PC and see what the first tracker in the list is and see wether it works.

I’ve found possible solution. So download Notepad++, then open EBOOT file with it, search for “ctorrent.prx” and you’ll see -M 20. Replace -M with -D and 20 with 50. Then save it. Peers will not be limited and down speed limits at 50 KB. Use this version only for not popular torrents :*]

Style Thing, how much time did you spend to find this solution? it works much better now, but sadly doesn’t download at 200 kb anymore…
guess i’ll keep 1 of each version. =)

and now it doesn’t download from btjunkie, lol.
guess i’ll just stick to the original, sigh…

looked around the eboot and found no problems, weird…
maybe it was just that one time…

Hey man,
This is one sick application for PSP. This only application can keep PSP alive(i think). I don’t use PSP anymore for gaming but only for surfing & videos, music.
Well PC eats up lot of power while downloading stuff but PSP can help save those huge electricity bills. May be u could devote ur little time to update & fix bugs on this solo application.
Although u r a legend for me but this legend should keep on going!
Thanks!
Thank u.
